This Week at Darrtown

06-05-2025
This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. Remember to wear RED if you choose to. Our scripture will be Acts 2:1-20 which describes the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. As the apostles were gathered, a sound like a mighty wind filled the house, and tongues of fire appeared and rested on each of them. They began to speak in different languages, empowered by the Spirit. A crowd of diverse people, puzzled by hearing their own native tongues, accused the apostles of being drunk. Peter refuted this, explaining the event as the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy: God pouring out His Spirit on all people, leading to visions, dreams, and wonders, heralding the arrival of the great Day of the Lord.

I moved a box from the garage this week and as I looked inside to see exactly what I had packed into it years ago, I found a class project from 5th grade at Monroe Elementary in the form of a newsletter that we put together as a class project that was assembled and passed out to all the school. All of us 5th and 6th grade students were invited to participate and write something for the edition. This was 1972 so I have kept this all these years and what a surprise to see all the different names of classmates, most of whom I have no idea where they are today. This was a Christmas edition, and I wrote about what I would like for Christmas. My answer was for my grandmother to be healed from Rheumatoid Arthritis which was something that she had developed and at that time there were not a lot of things that helped, and I remember her being in a lot of pain. Her doctor gave her what they called Gold Shots which later caused it to spread to all her body. When I think back now, we watched the crippling effects it took on her body as time moved on. Eventually she was no longer able to play the piano and hold on to things as her fingers and joints were swollen and in pain. She never lost the ability to hold the grandchildren and rock them while singing “Love Lifted Me” just as she did to us when we were very young but old enough to remember the touch of grandma. She lived until age 84 and often would wonder why the Lord had not taken her yet, especially as she often suffered in pain. I reminded her one time that she still could pick up the phone and often, even in the middle of night, people would call “Sister Bussell” for prayer including all her family on her phone. I remember watching her on many occasions in younger years, go down into the basement to pray for the needs of others at the old house. I told her that was why, toady, she was still being used for God’s glory in ministry even from her bed. Sometimes it is good to find little treasures in our midst. They often allow us to remember, smile, and gives thanks for many things. I did take a picture of the cover and sent it to the girl who designed it. She is now in Texas and occasionally we will catch up through technology.  She did appreciate the memory and had the same thought as I. Where has the time gone.

Church Sign Wisdom: “ “The will of God will not take us where the grace of God cannot sustain us.”
